My 10-day cleanse, Days 8/9: Stop asking me what I want to do for dinner

So let me ask you this: a cleanse isn’t a tough concept, right? Like, if I say — hypothetically — “I’m doing a 10-day smoothie cleanse. I’ll have smoothies for all my meals for the next 10 days,” that’s pretty clear, right?

I’m asking for a friend.

My “friend” has this fabulous hubby who is super supportive in all things, but who also seems to forget every day around 5pm that I’m — er, I mean, she’s — doing this cleanse and asks “what do you want to do for dinner?”

I guess I blew my cover; the friend is me. And to clarify, he’s not asking me in a 1950s wife-does-the meal-planning-and-cooking way, he’s asking in a let’s-brainstorm-this-together way that I like and appreciate. Except during this 10-day time span. What do I want to do for dinner? I want to roast a chicken. I want to order pad Thai. I want my mom’s chicken parmesan. But, you know, smoothie cleanse.

It’s Day 9. I’m close. I’m soooo close. And the results — both for my Meniere’s Disease symptoms and my overall wellness — have been amazing. It’s been a full week since my last episode of vertigo, I haven’t had to lie down out of sheer exhaustion since Day 3, my tinnitus has faded to the deep background, my workouts have improved, I’m sleeping really well, my skin, eyes and hair look fantastic, and my clothes fit better.

The clothes part is huge. I’ve been working remotely since Covid shut down my state in the middle of March. My professional wardrobe turned into this weird hybrid of professional lounger: hair, makeup, jewelry, office appropriate top…and yoga pants. On Zoom, I and everyone else look hunky dory: maybe we’re wearing an old favorite pair of fleece pants covered in wine glasses, maybe we’re not. It’s the Zoom version of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

And because of this, over the last seven months I’ve become a bit lazy about wearing pants that actually button. When I’ve had to, it’s been…uncomfortable. But over the last few days it’s different. I’ve had a wardrobe transplant, and my body isn’t rejecting it!

I have one day left, and there’s no doubt in my mind that I can do this. But in the meantime, please don’t ask me what I want to do for dinner.
